Stoke Rochford Golf: Eldred denies Wright hat-trick of matchplay titles

Steve McEwan and his guest Nigel Stafford (Rushcliffe GC) won with 46 points, one ahead of runners-up Brian Keightley and Mick Curtis (Melton Mowbray GC). Both pairs recorded an eagle for five points, Steve with a three on the par five 16th hole, and Brian with a two on the par four 11th.

Colin Howett and his guest R. James (Belton Woods) took third place on countback from Greg Ewart and Richard Haines (Melton Mowbray), both carding 44 points, and Phil White with M. Coleman (Sleaford) were fifth pipping several pairs on a back nine countback with 43.

Prizes were presented by vice-captain and organiser Cliff Mills.

* Keith Eldred became Stoke Rochford’s seniors singles matchplay knockout champion at the first attempt after defeating John Wright 1-up in the final.

In the 31st year of the competition, John was bidding to become the first three-time winner of the title after wins in 1998 and 2004.
