Exciting young middle distance runner Mari Smith is rediscovering her best form after battling back from debilitating injury and illness.
After a good 800m opener to the track season at Corby, where she clocked 2min 10.3secs, the Frisby athlete was back in action at the British Milers Club Grand Prix, in Stretford, Manchester, on Saturday evening.
She produced a performance of great maturity and determination in what was a very rough 800m race made up mainly of senior athletes.
The 18-year-old A-level student finished in an impressive time of 2.08.70, within a second of her personal best and only 2.7 seconds away from a European Junior Championships qualifying time.
The time also moved her up to sixth on the Power of 10 UK rankings for junior women.
Coach Bill Winter said: “The race demonstrated she is truly back among the best of the best which is where she belongs.
“After all her injury and illness issues, it’s a remarkable comeback.”
