Melton Mowbray Tennis Club and the Birch Wood School were delighted when former Great Britain Davis Cup star Danny Sapsford took a day out of his busy schedule to call in at the club during a session for the key stage five pupils recently.

With the Covid-19 virus reducing the availability of an indoor facility the tennis club offered to run a seven week block of coaching sessions for the school on the club’s Sports Village courts.

The sessions offered the opportunity to try out tennis and also get some much needed outdoor exercise for four groups of youngsters.

Overall 58 pupils attended the sessions each week with only three sessions being wiped out due to bad weather.

The sessions were headed up by club coach’s Ryan Parmar and Brent Horobin.

Jail Break and Bog Off proved to be popular game session endings and the pupils raised the biggest cheers when they eliminated Danny , one of the coaches or a member of staff.

Brent commented that, once again the pupils had been brilliant, so enthusiastic and well behaved, which makes life easy for any coach.

The club is delighted with the link up and further progress made with the Birch Wood School.

On the club front the recent club night tournament proved another success with 10 couples competing and proud winners on the night were the evergreen Wayne Mogg and the sprightly Jo Anderson.

Under the watchful eye of Ryan Parmar the couples were paired in two different groups with each couple playing everyone in their group.

At the end of the group stages Jo Anderson and Wayne Mogg came out on top of Group A just pipping Paul Heaton and Claire Creagan.

Group B saw Michelle Heaton and Simon Browning top the group just pipping Matt Daniels and Isla Parmar and Alison Stone with Rob Grant by a better games won average.

The Final proved a success for Jo and Wayne who ran out winners by the narrowest of margins, with the score standing at three all and deuce, they took the honours on a sudden death point.
