Melton Vale Post-16 (MV16) sport students got a big kick out of a visit from Premier League pioneer David Dein.
Mr Dein, the former vice-chairman of Arsenal Football Club and the Football Association, spent an hour on Thursday telling the students how he and the other four founders started the Premier League and how it has advanced.
He shared stories of his time as Arsenal vice-chairman, including how he managed to persuade the likes of Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires to sign for the London giants, and also linked football’s scouting process to education, saying ‘you can have all the talent in the world, but without the correct behaviour and attitude you won’t advance’.
Level 3 BTEC sport student Charlie Turner said: “For many students, and some teachers, this was a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to speak to such a legend of the sport. This was evident through the Q&A session at the end. Many people asked David questions, including ‘will ticket prices be lowered?’ and ‘what’s your view on the standard of refereeing this season?’
“David shared many stories but it was his motto that stood out the most - ‘You won’t get anywhere without sticking your neck out’. We’d like to thank him for sharing his vast knowledge of the business side of football.”
