League leaders Green Towers came to Saxby Road on Sunday with four clean sheets in five games, but were convincingly beaten by another great Foxes display.

The visitors started quickly and tested Connor Gill, but the keeper saved well. Max McCarthy forced an early corner, and Nathan Boivin provided a quality delivery, but the ball was scrambled clear.

Another long clearance found Tom Fairbrother who confidently beat his man and played in Toby Boivin who ran at Green Towers again and forced a save.

With Foxes on top, the visitors resorted to long balls, but Smith, Welch and Fairbrother all stood firm and Gill set Melton going again with good distribution.

Sam Chipman sprayed the ball around from the centre, finding McCarthy and Boivin out wide.

Fairbrother forced another corner, and from McCarthy’s cross, Lumb battled in front of goal to force the ball home for a deserved lead before the break.

Foxes started the second half with neat, fast passing, while Smith and Chipman won every ball and drove the home team forward.

Green Towers struggled to live with the speed of Melton’s wide players as they made the keeper work. Smith won possession again and found Chipman who beat two men and shrugged off a third challenge before smashing the ball past the keeper to double Foxes lead.

The visitors were struggling to get out of their half, and with Welch and Fairbrother providing support down the flanks, Lumb again went close.

Man-of-the-match Smith then fired a 25-yard free kick into the net to put the game beyond doubt.

Foxes: C. Gill, J. Smith, F. Welch, T. Fairbrother, S. Chipman (c), M. McCarthy, N. Boivin, H. Window, T. Lumb.
