Melton Foxes Under 17s extended their unbeaten run with a 6-1 demolition of Barrow with the goals shared between Shaun Smith, Cameron Ainge, Kenny Jones, Harrison Mayes and Lewis Thorpe.

The Foxes started brightly and were ahead within two minutes when George Wilkinson’s superb cross found Jones with lots of time and space to rifle the ball past the keeper from six yards.

Five minutes later, Joe Nickolls and Shaun Smith combined to put Mayes clear and his fierce cross-shot found the net.

Smith broke clear but saw his effort blocked by the keeper, but after 20 minutes it was 3-0. Lewis Thorpe put Ainge through and despite seeing his first shot blocked by a defender, the striker recovered quickly to turn and shoot past the keeper shot.

Ainge was denied by the keeper having been sent through by Thorpe who smashed the loose ball into the net from 10 yards.

And five minutes before half-time, Mayes collected a clearance on the left and crossed for Smith to flash a header past the keeper from close range (5-0).

Cameron Steans, Alex Kotarba and keeper Connor McNeight all came on for the second half and Melton stayed on top with Wilkinson’s 30-yard free-kick hitting the crossbar.

Smith was next to go close when he planted a header over the bar from close range before Barrow hit back with a goal out of the blue.

Smith’s delightful lob beat the keeper, but again came back off the bar and cleared, but he was not be denied his second and after neat work between Alex Walker and Kotarba, the striker planted a powerful volley past the keeper.

Smith, Walker, Ainge and Horobin all went close and barrow’s miserable day was compounded when Ainge was tripped and then kicked, the culprit receiving a straight red card.
