A double from striker Cameron Steans and strikes by Shaun Smith and Lewis Thorpe were enough to end the resistance of a talented Aylestone side.

Aylestone’s slick passing and quick movement pinned the Foxes back from kick-off and within five minutes they led when Melton failed to clear a corner and the centre-forward hammered in the loose ball.

Foxes hit back and Smith’s fierce shot was blocked before the rebound was sent across the face of the goal.

But Melton were level after 16 minutes when Connor Beeken headed on a long free kick across goal where Lewis Thorpe rifled in.

Within two minutes Aylestone were back in front when defenders George Wilkinson and Jacob Bates hesitated and the Park striker nipped between them to fire past keeper Joe Thorn.

Melton equalised again on the half-hour when Smith was fouled on the edge of the area. The big striker drove a fierce free kick which the keeper allowed to slip from his grasp into the net.

Five minutes later Connor Beeken’s superb volley hit the post and Cameron Steans blasted home the rebound.

Smith nearly made it four seconds before half-time but his close-range shot flew over.

Five minutes after the break Steans notched his second, cutting in from the left and firing a fierce shot into the far corner.

Smith hit the post and then crossed to Steans who spurned his hat-trick chance from two yards.

As the young visitors tired, Smith, Steans and Tom Hope all went close with good strikes.
