Footballers from John Ferneley College showed off their skills to good effect on the district and county level.
The Melton school’s Year 7 boys joined their Year 9 team as current Melton and Rutland champions after finishing joint winners of the district finals.
The finals took place across town at Long Field Academy, and the Ferneley boys turned in a brilliant performance which included a win over the hosts.
Ferneley’s Year 7 girls came within a whisker of picking up the county title last Thursday.
Opening against South Charnwood, the Melton girls won 3-0 thanks to goals from Hannah Gillespie, Annie Armitage and Issy McGrady.
A very tough game followed against Kibworth who just held out for a 1-0 win.
Their final game produced a 4-0 win against Wreake Valley, the highlight of which was a Hannah Gillespie goal from her own half.
The win gave Ferneley a second place finish in the county finals.
The Melton school also fielded a team in the Year 10 girls’ county finals at Gateway College, in Leicester.
First up were very strong opponents from South Wigston who ran out 3-0 winners. A much closer game followed against Market Bosworth which produced a 0-0 stalemate. Alisha Smith-Eccles came closest to breaking the deadlock with a fierce shot which rocked the bar.
The final two games ended in 3-1 defeats against Robert Smythe and Wreake Valley, despite Sarah Brown scoring in both games. The girls ended the tournament in fourth.
