Melton Charity Cup Round One

A HAT-TRICK from striker Jake Cox and solo strikes from Cameron Ainge and skipper Alex Horobin capped a superb charity cup debut at Holwell Sports FC.

The Foxes were quickly into their stride and after a minute in-form winger Harrison Mayes beat his full-back and sent a pinpoint cross to Jake Cox who headed over from close range.

Mayes broke and despite being brought down managed to feed Ainge whose fierce shot struck the post. Only George Wilkinson’s goal-line clearance denied Quorn before Ainge forced a good save.

Melton went ahead on 20 minutes when Wilkinson’s floated free kick was met by Alex Horobin who put a terrific header past the keeper.

Within two minutes, Ainge collected another Wilkinson pass and sent a 20-yard drive into the corner of the net.

Wilkinson again cleared a goalbound Quorn header and Foxes hit straight back when Cox curled a free kick in from the edge of the box.

The Foxes were well on top moving into the second half, but Quorn broke away and pulled one back on 50 minutes when full-back Chris Lovegrove could only steer an attempted clearance past his own keeper.

Cox rifled another free kick past the keeper to restore the three-goal lead, and Alex Walker, having just forced a scrambling save, set up Melton’s fifth goal, crossing low for Cox to steer past the keeper from close range.

Mayes reached the byline and pulled the ball back for Ainge who sidefooted past the post with the keeper beaten.

A really positive performance.
