East Midlands Counties League: Holwell Sports routed by Graham St Prims

Mid-table Graham St Prims were the team enjoying their post-match refreshments after a surprisingly easy win over the home side.

In a cagey opening by both sides, Holwell’s passing game looked good and Graham Wells was presented with a good chance within three minutes, but just couldn’t get control to make the chance work.

Any thoughts of a confident start were dashed as early as five minutes when the home defence were all at sea and fell behind to Dominic Wilkinson’s goal.

Within 14 minutes the pattern for the day was set as Tom Rushby, who was finding acres of space on the left, tormented first Harris and then Hallam.

Rushby broke free to send in a low delivery across the face of the goal which no Holwell player could get near before it reached Kurt Dallison for an easy tap-in.

The closest the home side came to scoring was in the 37th minute when Julian Joachim got a shot away that the visitors’ keeper did well to save low down.

Holwell looked a shade better at the start of the second half with Harris and Joachim inter-changing well with a one-two on the edge of the box. Joachim got clear, but his scuffed shot did not stretch the keeper.

The game was killed off just before the hour mark when Ian Bitmead completely misjudged a speculative ball over the top.

This left the sharp James Bushby with a clear run on goal and he easily beat the advancing Hood in the Holwell goal for 3-0.

The Bushby brothers then proceeded to press home the visitors’ dominance as first Thomas and then James, with his second, completed the rout, sending the home fans away early again wondering what the future holds at Holwell.

* On Saturday, more mid-table opponents await Holwell when they travel to Stapenhill who thrashed Arnold 6-0 on Tuesday evening. Kick-off is 3pm.
