Derby honours for Melton Town following 6-1 victory at Holwell Sports

Melton Town took the derby honours last night following their 6-1 victory at Holwell Sports.

A capacity crowd awaited the first local derby of the season, held at Welby Road.

Melton were eager to get their title challenge back up and running after their surprise defeat to Bourne Town on Saturday, and Holwell needed a win after three 2-1 defeats in a row.

The first effort on goal came after just 47 seconds when Lever let fly from 20 yards out, brushing the top of the bar.

The game then became a stalemate as both defences dominated.

Beaver had a low shot which was deflected to Challis and Reek had a run and shot which needed a brave block to prevent the hosts taking the lead.

Holwell should have taken the lead when a freekick found Reek on the wing and his first-time cross found Logan unmarked in the area - but his header could only directed straight at Peet in goal.

Then on 31 minutes the deadlock was broken.

A ball into Munton saw him turn Coser and a late tackle brought him down.

Hammond made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Minutes later it was 2-0 when Beaver danced past two tackles after a 20-pass move and found Munton, who struck the ball from 20 yards out into the top corner.

Holwell came out in the second half with some fight in them with Reek firing over the bar from distance.

But Melton made it three when a ball played low into the area to Munton saw him touch it on to Parsons, who switched the ball onto his right foot and placed it into the corner of the net.

Four minutes later and a long ball up to Parsons and a one-two with Munton ended with Parsons slipping the ball under Challis.

Lever had a couple of chances to get on the scoresheet and Kirk had a shot blocked for Holwell.

In the 66th minute the hosts were awarded a penalty for a push on Bitmead, with Black smashing the ball down the middle to make it 4-1.

Parsons hit the post and a great ball over the top of the defence from Lever found Munton clear on goal, only for his volley to bounce off the top of the crossbar.

Munton had a clear effort from a corner which was blocked on the line, but he was to complete his hat-trick in the final 10 minutes.

A ball into Lever on the edge of the area was then tapped to the unmarked Munton, who slotted past Challis.

Into injury time, a ball over the top found Munton, who beat the offside trap and he made no mistake as he sent a rasping shot into the roof of the net.
