Asfordby FC Under 17s started the new campaign on Sunday with a typically committed team performance.
Callow and Cochrane pulled the strings in midfield for a new-look attack, and this bore fruits after 10 minutes. Curtis found debutant Green whose mazy run into the Ibstock box caused mayhem and when the ball broke to Atherley his low shot found the bottom corner.
Green and Reed on the right and man-of-the-match McGowan and Atherley on the left were a constant threat, but against the run of play Ibstock levelled after a rare defensive lapse.
Spurred on, Asfordby attacked at will with Richards a constant menace leading the line. It wasn’t long before the superb Green beat three players and smashed over a cross which was expertly met by Atherley for his second goal.
Both teams struggled with the heat after the break, but Asfordby always looked comfortable with N. Herbert commanding in midfield and O’Neil adding much-needed zip. The latter chipped the advancing keeper, but his effort hit the bar.
And late on, Green was set free on the right by Skinner’s fine pass, but he couldn’t cap a dream debut with a goal.
Ibstock went for broke in the dying seconds, but the central defensive partnership of A. Herbert and Wesson dominated, leaving keeper Leatherland with little to do.
