Asfordby push higher league Groby all the way in cup

Asfordby Amateurs Girls Under 12s took on higher league Groby in an end-to-end League Cup second round tie.

Amateurs started well and inside five minutes striker Alice Henley O’Sullivan found herself through one-on-one, but she shot straight at the keeper.

After a good period, Amateurs found themselves trailing 1-0 following a well-worked Groby attack.

Soon after it was 2-0 after another decisive attack from the Division One side.

Asfordby brought on Sophie Townsend for the second half and she made an immediate impact. Finding herself on the right of the Groby box. Townsend took on the last defender before lashing an unstoppable strike past the keeper to renew hopes.

Ruby S, Lauryn A, Lauren F, Ruby A, Hope M and Erin B all came on, but with 15 minutes left, Groby put together a great passing move, attacking with purpose to make it 3-1.

But Amateurs dug in and showed why they are top of their own league. Within minutes Erin Baker found herself free on the edge of the Groby box and smashed home a great shot to make it 3-2 and give hope to the hosts.

The last five minutes was all Asfordby with Ruby Attewell racing clear and shooting agnonisingly wide after a superb through pass from Townsend.

The equaliser unfortunately never came, but the performance showed how much progress the team has made this season, pushing their higher league opponents all the way.

Asfordby’s league and cup campaign is now over, and while joint top of the U12s Green League, must await results around them to discover where they will eventually finish.
