Five-shot swing on final end seals vital success

Drama continues to pursue Stamford bowlers with yet another nail-biting finish, this time in their latest county league Division One fixture with Lincoln IBC.

Following last week’s narrow defeat by Spalding in the Denny Cup, Stamford Men’s A team were determined to regain some pride.

Against the county’s biggest club, in a match which could determine their status in the top division - fortune swung their way with a five shot count on the last end to win the match 100-98 and claim 14 valuable points.

With two of the five rinks drawing and a third winning by just two shots, it reflected the tightness of the tussle overall.

After rinks skipped by Keith Rippin and Roger Martyn had tied 18-18 and 19-19 respectively and Peter Edwards’ quartet had hung on to grab a vital 23-21 success (after dropping five shots in the first end), it was left to Martyn Dolby’s rink to salvage the points.

Only a big count on the last end would cancel out the damage done by Lincoln’s Mike Smith against Cliff Watson (18-28). And with Dusty Miller drafted in to his rink alongside Richard Allam and Jonathan Earl, Dolby added two shots to the three already surrounding the jack - enough to snatch a 22-12 win and overall victory for his team by two.

l Hopes of a quick return to the county league first division for Stamford’s relegated mixed team, suffered a setback when they returned with little to show from their visit to Skegness apart from four meagre points.

While rinks skipped by Martyn Dolby and John Holroyd emerged successful, others couldn’t adapt to the tricky local surface and allowed the home side to take full advantage.

However, Stamford still head the table.

l Stephen Harris (18) from Stamford IBC was a member of the Lincolnshire Liberty Trophy team that beat Yorkshire 123-121 at York and District IBC on Saturday. Lincs were last year’s beaten finalists.

Making his debut, he lost on his rink by 14 shots but that did not detract from his performance.

Fellow debutant Danny Brown said: “Stephen hardly had a bowl outside of two feet and for one so young on debut I was really pleased for him. He had a good battle up front.

He’s an outstanding talent.”
