Egerton Park completed their second victory over Melton in 24 hours as they avenged an early season league loss against their cross-town rivals.
With memories still fresh of their Salaman Cup win on Friday evening, Park won the toss and asked Melton to bat first on Saturday.
It seemed a brave decision on a day which looked ideal for batting, and when Gary Potter took nine runs off the first Kamal Panchal over it may have looked a foolish.
But good disciplined bowling followed, and when Nick Watchorn bowled Gary Potter and then Lee Freer the following ball, Melton were reduced to 38-3 after 14 overs.
Zaheer Hussain replaced Panchal at the Grove School end and once he had taken two wickets in two balls in the 19th over, the pressure was on Melton at 54-5.
With 14 overs remaining and three wickets in hand, Karl Tew and Scott Mooney supported Paul Stevenson (58) to add 75 runs.
Melton were finally dismissed for 170 with one ball of their allotted overs remaining.
Egerton Park’s reply was brisk with 49 coming off the first nine overs for the early loss of Stuart Rose.
Four quick wickets gave Melton momentum and the home spectators were beginning to fear the worst as their team were reduced to 82-5.
But time was on Park’s side and after initially rebuilding the innings, Tom Glover (53 not out) and Josh Blunt (40 not out) were able to put on an unbroken 90-run partnership to get them over the line.
Glover had the honour of hitting the winning runs in the 38th over and bringing up his half-century with a towering six over mid-wicket off Melton’s South African overseas player Kreschuer.
