The former ski jumper, whose life was portrayed in a Hollywood movie this year, cut the ribbon at the McDonald’s branch in Thorpe End.

Improvements include an option now for customers to order their food at digital kiosks and have it delivered to their tables instead of queuing and ordering from staff.

Eddie ‘The Eagle’, who famously competed with little success for Great Britain at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, said: “Eddie the Eagle said: “I am delighted to be invited to help open this melton Mowbray restaurant following its recent refurbishment.

“It is great to see the digital features that have been introduced and I’m proud to support the investment in the local community.”

Free to use tablet computers are also available as part of the transformation carried out by franchisee Martin Cuthbert.

He said: “From mums coming in with their kids, to people having a working lunch, I expect the feedback to these changes to be positive.”
