Redmile School cricketers storm to second cup win three years

REDMILE Primary School maintained their successful cricket record with a second tournament win in three years.

Redmile, who boast England cricketer Luke Wright among their former pupils, won the Vale of Belvoir Cricket Tournament, held at Belvoir High School last week.

Having finished top of the league with a 100 per cent winning record, Redmile defeated Waltham in the final, following up their 2010 tournament triumph and last year’s final appearance.

Star player this time around was Hugh Herring who received the school’s Morley Trophy for outstanding effort and for showing the greatest potential. The trophy was donated to the school by the family of Year 6 pupil Alfie Morley, who leaves this year, as thanks for the opportunities Redmile has given him over the years.

Headteacher Julie Hopkins said: “Our sports teams have had an amazing year. Winning the cricket tournament is the icing on the cake, almost literally as I always provide cakes when they come back with a trophy and this year I’ve had to make lots! I’m really proud of them.”

Former England A cricketer and director of the Belvoir Castle Cricket Trust, Darren Bicknell, said: “I was delighted to see Redmile Primary School’s success. It has been great to work with Redmile and help deliver their cricket programme over the last two years.

“Great credit should also go to Neil Atkins who has been delivering the seven-week coaching sessions supported by the Cricket Society as well as Andy Wing the school sports coach. The children showed great skill and commitment and were worthy winners.”
