Work has started to dismantle and clear the equipment at Melton Skate Park to make way for a new modern, hard-wearing £300,000 replacement facility.
Skaters and BMX riders will have to enjoy their hobbies elsewhere until the new venue is opened on the same site, in Priors Close which is bordered by Play Close Park, in early January.
Melton Council approved in July it’s own planning application for the rebuild, which will be made from concrete to ensure it lasts many years and cater for all abilities.
A spokesperson said: “Work has now commenced on the new skate park.
“This week work will involve fencing off the site, preparing the land for the build and generating site access for plant machinery and deliveries.”
Young people in Melton raised thousands of pounds towards the cost of the new skate park, with members of the Melton Skate Park Group holding their own fundraising events as well as helping to attract funding for the project. They also had an input into the eventual design.
