Volunteer first responders get service awards

Volunteer medics who have attended emergencies and other incidents in Melton as back-up to professional paramedics have been given awards for their dedicated service.

The community first responders were honoured for the time they give to the role with two of them - Tim Frisby and John Dehnel clocking up more than 5,000 hours in a year.

They were presented with gold awards - for working more than 1,000 annual hours - along with Peter Scott, Dave Simmonds, Simon Butler and Sarah Gallaway.

Silver awards, for at least 750 hours a year, went to Patrick Belcher, Andy Crossley and John Thompson.

And there was also a bronze award, for more than 500 annual hours, for Ina Scott, who co-ordinates the Melton team.

Mrs Scott said: “Melton has a very dedicated group of first responders.

“We have 15 active members which is better than a lot of other areas locally.

“There is a big mix of people involved in the scheme.

“Some of them are retired people and others work in engineering, IT, office work and other jobs.”

First responders are often first on the scene of an incident, before ambulance crews and other emergency services, because they are based locally.

They have dedicated cars and carry a first aid bag, masks, oxygen and defibrillator machines.

Mrs Scott, who has been co-ordinator for a decade, said: “We are all members of St John Ambulance and we are trained to deal with all situations, some of which may be life-threatening.

“Our members attend to people who difficulty breathing, some who have had cardiac arrests or asthma attacks and others who are diabetics and need treatment.”

Melton first responders cover a vast area, ranging from Rothley, Mountsorrel and Loughborough in the west to Saxby and Colsterworth to the east of the town.

Mrs Scott added: “We have to cover a very rural area but we are lucky that we can have five, six or seven people on call at any one time.”
