Updated: Horse rescued from canal at Syston

A horse trapped in a canal in Syston has been freed by firefighters.

The animal, unable to get out of fast-flowing water in a section of water near to Meadow Lane, is now under the care of a local vet.

Fire crews from Birstall, Easton and the technical rescue team from Leicester South were called to the scene just after 9am this morning. It was freed just before 11am.

10.56am: A rescue is under way in Syston this morning (Monday) to save a horse trapped in a canal.

Firefighters are at the scene in Meadow Lane, attempting to rescue the horse from fast-flowing water.

They were called just after 9am, with crews from Birstall, Easton and the technical rescue team from Leicester South in attendance.

Members of the technical rescue team are cutting back trees in a bid to pull the horse to safety.
