Three people escaped serious injury in Melton this morning (Monday) when the car they were travelling in careered across the road into the driveway of the property opposite, crashed into gates and a fence and ended up on its side.

Emergency services converged on Gartree Court, a quiet cul de sac backing on to the Sandy Lane Methodist Church, to treat the casualties who were trapped inside the vehicle.

Iris Gyorvari was just getting up when the incident happened at 9.19am and her husband went to investigate after he heard the noise of the crash.

Mrs Gyorvari said: “The car came from the driveway of the house opposite us.

“When my husband went out to see what had happened, the car was on its side and three people were trapped inside it.

“We had an air ambulance flying in, an ambulance, police and fire engines - I’ve never seen so many people in this little street before.”

Firefighters arrived from Melton together with a technical rescue team from the city’s Southern station to extricate the casualties, two of whom are understood to be Spanish people on holiday.

“The three people in the car were in shock more than anything and they were able to come inside my house for a cup of tea when they were released from the car,” said Mrs Gyorvari.

“It could have been a lot worse. There is damage to our gates, the fence and a wheely bin but we are just relieved they weren’t badly injured.”

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The ambulance service requested the fire service attend to a single vehicle road traffic collision into a building.

“The vehicle involved was on its side on the driveway and three people were stuck in it.

“Police and air ambulance were in attendance and doctors assessed the casualties.”
