33-year-old man killed in A46 road collision at Syston

Police were called to the scene on the southbound carriageway, just north of the Hobby Horse roundabout, at around 11.40pm.

The incident involved a black Volkswagen Golf and a silver Toyota Yaris and it has now been announced that the driver of the Volkswagen, a 33-year-old man, subsequently died at the scene.

The female driver of the Toyota sustained minor injuries and was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary for treatment by a crew from East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) before being discharged.

Leicestershire Police offices closed the A46 southbound, between Cossington and the Hobby Horse roundabout, for several hours to allow for an investigation of the scene. The road has since reopened this morning.

A police spokesperson said: “The circumstances surrounding the collision are in the early stages and officers would like to speak to anyone who was in the area and witnessed the collision.

“Anyone with a dashcam, and who may have captured the incident, is also encouraged to get in touch.”

Those with information which might assist police enquiries are asked to contact DC 1761 Pete Davies on 101, quoting incident number 710 of September 27.

Fire crews from Birsall and Leicester’s Western fire station were also at the scene.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to a road traffic collision by police in which two vehicles were involved. “Two casualties casualties were treated by ambulance and air ambulance crews and the A46 southbound lane was closed to traffic.”
