Train halted near Melton after ploughing into four cows on the line

Firefighters were alerted when a train was halted near Melton after striking and killing four cows which had wandered on to the track.

The incident, which happened at Lag Lane in Thorpe Arnold, prevented the train from continuing on its journey.

Inspectors from Network Rail attened the scene to check the condition of the vehicle.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue, which sent a heavy rescue crew and a Ford Range with technical rescue crew from the Southern Fire Station. said: “We found one cow impaled on the train and it was removed by the fire service.

“The carcass was removed from the line to enable the train to proceed. Three further cows were also deceased due to the impact from the incident.”

The call-out was at 9.41am on Saturday morning and firefighters left the scene at 2.58pm.
