Tom Fox celebrated his 80th birthday in style on Sunday with a surprise ride around Melton on a horsedrawn carriage.
The trip, which was organised as a gift by his 76-year-old wife Paulette, started from their home in Wycliffe Avenue with a glass of Champagne and carried on through the town centre before returning for a family picnic with 20 relatives.
Mrs Fox said: “It was wonderful and Tom really enjoyed it. Everyone was waving to us as we went through Melton. When we got back the family had decorated our home for Tom’s birthday which was lovely.”
The couple, who have been married 56 years, have a son Trevor and a daughter Denise, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs Fox, who organised the treat through Staffordshire-based Horsedrawn Occasions, added: “I told so many fibs to Tom over the last fortnight to keep it a surprise. And I kept Googling the weather every day but luckily we had a nice day.”
