Some of the most dedicated green-fingered gardners behind the best kept allotments in Melton have been honoured at an awards night recently.

The council’s annual allotment competition winners were announced at their Parkside offices on Tuesday.

The competition included all four of the Melton Council-run allotment sites - Lake Terrace, Redwood Avenue, Doctors Lane and The Crescent. The Victoria Street allotments also took part.

This year’s judges were councillors Gerlad Botterill and Margaret Glancy, Malcolm Johnson of Melton and District Allotment Association and Barry Cook of Melton and District Allotment Association, who stood in for Gary Johnson.

The overall champion of the competition was Mr J Abbott, who has an allotment in Redwood Avenue. He was presented with the Posnett Spade by Melton Mayor councillor David Wright.

The overall champion runner up was Mr M Way who has an allotment in Doctors Lane. He received the Melton Mowbray and District Allotment and Garden Association Spade, kindly donated by the association and presented by Malcolm Johnson.

Best newcomer was Mr P Baker who has an allotment in Doctors Lane. He was presented with a voucher and plate, kindly donated by councillor Elaine Holmes.

The Doctors Lane prizes awarded by Malcolm Johnson went to Plot 29 winner Mr M Way and Plot 64A runner up Mr P Baker.

The Crescent prizes awarded by Barry Cook went to Plot 12 winner Mrs C A Stocks and Plot 10 runner up Mr S Dipenza.

The Redwood Avenue prizes awarded by councillor Gerlad Botterill went to Plot 3 winner Mr J Abbott and Plot 11A runner up Ms M A Marples.

The Lake Terrace prizes awarded by councillor Margaret Glancy went to Plot 26 Mr G Jones and Plot 27A runner up Mr D North.

The Victoria Street prizes awarded by Melton Mayor councillor David Wright went to Plot 8A winner Mr and Mrs P Breeze and Plot 4B runner up Mrs S Garofana.
