The Amwell appoints former Melton Times Sportswoman of the Year Vicki Hurrell as an activities co-ordinator

Vicki has joined The Amwell, a residential, dementia and respite care home in Asfordby Road, to oversee and manage their lively and varied activities programme bringing fun, action and social interaction to the residents.

The 38-year-old from Melton is no stranger to being active herself, with a track record of racing MGBs, taking part in a Half Ironman, Ultra Marathons, duathlons and obstacle course racing.

In 2010, she won the Melton Times Sportswoman of the Year for her success in MGB racing, and through her obstacle racing she raised £1,000 for MS Society, and achieved many podium positions over the years.

Vicki’s career started in the hair industry after leaving school, but through her interest in sports and fitness she realised a passion for anatomy and physiology and went on to study sports injury, rehabilitation, injury treatment and massage for three years at Loughborough University.

Her outstanding sporting ability has seen her take part in last year’s Nottingham Outlaw Half Ironman, and this year she positioned fifth in the UltraMarathon Fell Races, which took her over the coast of Cornwall, Morecombe Bay to Coniston through the Lake District and up to the summit of Mount Snowdon. Most recently, she took part in the local Equinox 24 - a mixed terrain race - and the Stathern Duathlon.

Vicki joined The Amwell care home as its injury, rehabilitation, massage and hair and beauty therapist, enabling her to run classes for the residents and gain an understanding of what they enjoy and benefit from most.

But she will now join the home as one of its activities co-ordinators, alongside Tina MacPhee and Laraine Lewis. The home offers a varied and busy activities programme with a wide range of clubs, outings, classes and events to suit every different taste, and Vicki is looking forward to joining the team and adding in some new ideas

Vicki said: “As a sports person myself I love exercise and really understand how good it is for everyone. I find great satisfaction from seeing the benefits that movement activities have on our residents.

“I’m looking forward to incorporating even more movement activities into our already exciting programme and more outings to bring The Amwell into the community.

“Taking on the positon of activities co-ordinator is an exciting new role for me and I have great plans ahead for the residents, home, staff and community.”

Care home manager, Tracy Heyes, said: “We are delighted that Vicki has joined our activities team. She’s been with us since May in the therapist role and she’s a real hit with the residents and rest of the staff.

“We love hearing about all her sporting adventures and she’s an inspiration to us all to get moving more. We’re looking forward to the events that she’s planning.”
