A retrospective planning application for a garden playhouse in Pickwell has been permitted despite neighbours’ objections.

Somerby parish councillor Pat Fynn said the 2.9m high Wendy house - sited in the back garden of Rose Cottage on Main Street - was ‘a substantial building viewed by many as an eyesore and built within a conservation area.’

Fellow objector Nicola Fowler told Melton Council’s planning committee the playhouse was an ‘out of character, obtrusive building’ and highlighted that 12 letters of objection plus the parish council’s objections had been received by the borough council.

Despite committee members’ own concerns about the playhouse it was explained to them that the structure was about 1.3m away from the property boundary and if it had been sited more than two metres away it would have been classed as permitted development thereby not requiring planning permission.

After much debate the committee eventually decided to approve the application on condition that a soft landscaping scheme (preference for evergreen hedge) screening the playhouse from neighbouring properties would be submitted and approved within three months.
