More than 1,400 riders took part in the 2015 event, setting off on a 30km or tougher 50km ride along the Viking Way.

Proceeds have been split between Redmile Primary School and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

The Alcock family won the Peter Snow Special Award for many years of volunteering and organising the Viking Challenge.

Headteacher Julie Hopkins said: “On behalf of the whole schoolcommunity I’d like to say a massive thank you to members of the Viking Challenge committee for all they do to make this event possible.

“This money really will make a difference to the pupils and families at our school, so their hard work and enthusiasm is very much appreciated. and highly valued.”

Preparations are already underway for the 2016 ride on Sunday, October 2. This year’s charity partner is The Stroke Association, who provide support to those affected by strokes. For more information visit www.vikingchallenge.org.uk
