Six local schools took part in this new Melton in Bloom growing project to develop knowledge, skills and understanding of how herb plants are grown and can be best used to make healthy meals.

The mayor, Councillor Pru Chandler, a keen gardener herself, was pleased to see such a high level of interest being taken in the activity, which was also supported by managers from Brooksby Melton College and their newly appointed horticultural lecturer Elizabeth Hammond.

Before the presentations began, Gavin Fletcher of LCC Sustainable Foods gave an interesting talk on looking for local opportunities and sites to grow more healthy food plants to eat.

Next year Melton in Bloom hopes to teach pupils how to grow vegetables and each school that takes part will be given a large starter pack of seeds donated by B&Q Melton.
