The fifth category, Young Writer of the Year, is a special award that will be given to a young writer who puts themselves in the place of a 16-year-old recruit writing home to his mother while on his way to basic training in 1916. Entries close on February 12.

Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Jennifer, Lady Gretton, said: “We have received some wonderful entries so far this year. I also know that there are many other young people in Leicestershire who are inspiring and enthusing people around them, but whose achievements may not always have received the recognition they should.

“These award a are another way of highlighting what young people are doing and I’m looking forward to meeting the nominees.”

Category winners will receive prizes suggested by their nominators to the value of £500 and all shortlisted entrants will receive a prize.
