Jake Watkins (15), who was diagnosed with Leukemia Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (cancers of the lymphatic system) in August 2014, has turned his hair bright blue and raised £165 for the children’s cancer charity.

The inspirational fifteen-year-old who was one of the child of courage prize winners at last year’s Melton Times Community Awards, had his hair bleached and dyed at Jago’s Hair Design in Melton.

His mum Trudi said: “My son decided to raise money for CLIC Sargent, one of the charities that supported us during his seven month stay in both Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre and the Leicester Royal Infirmary Hospital.

“Jake is now a year into remission and doing well. He attends Willow Bank children’s hospital school in Wigston four days a week.

“The chemotherapy has effected his short term memory quite badly and he has been left with nerve damage to his feet and spine. This effects his balance but he is working hard to improve this and he still has a daily drug regime to control pain and help him sleep.

“Jake is making a steady recovery although we’re very aware that the cancer may recur within the first five years of diagnosis and I’m very proud of how he is dealing with it all.”
