A Melton hotel is celebrating after scooping an award for engaging in environmentally-friendly practices.

The Best Western Sysonby Knoll has achieved a silver level award in the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders programme, which helps people world-wide plan greener trips by highlighting hotels and B&Bs engaging in green practices.

The award recognises the efforts of accommodation providers to reduce their environmental impact and follows a stringent audit by a leading environmental consulting firm. The more green practices a hotel has in place, the higher its GreenLeader level, which is shown on the property’s listing on the TripAdvisor site.

Sysonby Knoll received particular recognition for extensive use of energy-efficient lighting, use of intelligent heating controllers and efforts to reduce volume of waste to landfill by recycling.

In addition around two acres of land are used to grow pollen-rich plants for beneficial insects and a willow plantation acts as a carbon sink to help offset carbon emissions.

Hotel manager Vicky Wilkin said: “We’re proud and delighted with this latest award. Reducing the environmental impact of all areas of the business is something we’ve been working on for a number of years.”

Owner Jenny Howling added: “It’s particularly pleasing as we’re gearing up to celebrate 50 years since my parents first started the hotel and restaurant in 1965.”
