Brooksby Melton College’s Brooksby Campus has become the new home of Cats Protection Leicester and County branch.

The new Cats Protection branch, based at the Animal Care Centre, will provide a fantastic opportunity for animal management students, who will work closely with the organisation’s staff and volunteers, giving them a unique insight into the workings of an animal care charity.

Cherilyn Huff, programme team manager for animal and equine Management at Brooksby Melton College (BMC), said: “We are very excited at this new venture and very much look forward to working with Cats Protection in supporting the rehoming of their cats.

“The rehoming facility will be a huge benefit to our learners, enabling them to learn all aspects of rescued cat welfare along with supporting the rehoming process through modules within the curriculum.”

Shaki McFarland, Cats Protection’s new branch development manager, said: “Animal care students from BMC will be caring for Cats Protection cats in the college’s cattery. Their help will be invaluable and will assist us to kick-start homing in the Leicestershire area.”

BMC offers a wide range of animal management courses, from Level 2 through to degrees. The Animal Care Centre offers a plethora of excellent facilities for students, including cattery and kennel units, a canine aqua treadmill, science laboratories, a grooming school and a nursing practical room.

In addition to being an excellent resource for BMC animal management students, the new Cats Protection branch provides opportunities for local cat lovers to get involved on a volunteer basis. The charity are currently looking for a welfare team leader, transport volunteers and fosterers, all of whom will provide vital support to the cats housed at the centre.
