Pensioners aged 65 and over are being invited to have a free cup of tea or coffee and a mince pie at the 54A King Street Cafe in Melton.

Supermarket giant Morrisons asked independent cafe owner Nigel Keep if he’d be interested in hosting the event on Tuesday (December 1) and he was happy to accept.

Pensioners aged 65 and over can pop into the cafe, between 10am and noon, for their free drink and mince pie.

Nigel said: “It’s great that a large international retailer like Morrisons is working with a small independent coffee shop.”

It’s understood Morrisons are providing the cafe with the mince pies and sending over some staff, as well as paying for the tea and coffee.

Morrisons run the initiative in their own stores which have in-house coffee shops but have teamed up with the Melton cafe because the Melton store doesn’t have one.

Mark Bowns, the Melton store’s general manager said: “We’re very grateful of our loyal customers and this is a small token to show our appreciation ahead of Christmas.”
