Melton’s St Mary’s Church invited Star Wars fans to attend a special service on Christmas morning, themed on the sci-fi blockbuster, in an attempt to attract more young people into the pews.
Local residents heeded the call and attended the service, some carrying lightsaber props or wearing Darth Vader masks.
The all-age Christmas celebration service was on “Star Corps” using the Star Wars concept to tell a timeless truth about God sending his son, Jesus, to be born a baby on Christmas Day.
“We were very happy to see so many young people attend,” said the reverend and rector of St Mary’s Church Kevin Ashby after the service.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opened in cinemas only recently is already the fastest selling film of the year.
