Melton police to hold first LGBT workshop for teenagers

Sgt Rebecca Horsfall will lead a team of officers at the session at The Venue on Nottingham Road, on October 25.

Other agencies will also be represented at the event, such as counsellors and sexual health practitioners.

The aim is to talk about the need for tolerance of young people with different sexualities to prevent hate crimes being committed and to support any youngsters who have suffered problems in this area.

PCSO Steph Williams, who is a town beat officer, said: “This is the first time we’ve done anything like this and we are trialling it to see how effective it can be.

“We haven’t had any reports of this type of hate crime recently but as a force we are trying to reach out to as many communities as we can.

“Melton isn’t a big place but it has a lot of students so there are likely to be young people who might benefit from a session like this.”

Any young people aged between 14 and 17 are invited to attend the workshop, from 3pm until 7pm.
