Major road closed as firefighters tackle Melton incident

A major road in Melton is currently closed (Thursday afternoon) in both directions as emergency services deal with a fire.

Asfordby Road is closed between the junctions of Rudbeck Avenue and Dorothy Avenue following reports that a bollard had caught fire.

A Leicestershire Police spokesperson told the Melton Times: “Around 12.20pm, officers received a report of a bollard that had caught fire in Asfordby Road, Melton Mowbray.

“Asfordby Road was closed between Rudbeck Avenue and Dorothy Avenue while Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene.

“It was discovered the fire was due to a burst water main and Severn Trent Water were asked to attend.

“Police officers attended to assist with traffic management.

“No injuries were reported.”

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue service said it was alerted at 11.49am to the incident.

A spokesperson said: “We got a report that a bollard was issuing smoke.

“On arrivals there was a burst water main and electrics were sparking from the bollard.”

Representatives from Western Power and Severn Trent are now attending the scene.

Police are advising motorists to take alternative routes and any HGV drivers requiring access to the A46 to use the A607 instead.
