Fifteen-year-old Alannah, who lives with her foster carers in Hickling, spends around five hours a month serving breakfast at a village club, helping at the local Women’s Institute and more.

Nominated for making a real difference in her community, Alannah was among 250 young people presented with honours at last week’s children in care events organised by Leicestershire County Council.

Alannah, who stars in a short film premiered at the events and sings in the council’s children in care choir, Beacon Voices, said: “I help out in the community every time I can. I enjoy it and I love meeting new people. The celebration events are really fun. I do feel nervous about getting my award but I also feel proud.

“The awards make a big difference and help people in care to be more involved and try new things.”

The children in care events are held every year to mark the wealth of achievement among the 450 children in the council’s care and over 200 care leavers.

Councillor Ivan Ould, cabinet member for children and families, said: “The celebrations showcase the triumphs of our children in care, both in their personal lives and important accomplishments at school, college or university. Every year I’m moved by how our young people have overcome obstacles to achieve so much and I congratulate them on their deserved awards.”
