Firefighters rescue motorists from flood waters near Melton

Inflatable sleds had to be used to get to two people at East Goscote and another driver at Coston following heavy rainfall and sleet in the area.

The East Goscote incident happened on Broome Lane yesterday (Sunday) at 12.19pm, with a crew from the city’s Eastern fire station and a technical rescue team from the southern station attending.

A Leicestershire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “A call was received from a passer-by reporting a car in flood water with water halfway up the vehicle with persons inside.

“Upon arrival, the incident was confirmed as two vehicles, one car and one van, stuck in approximately three feet of flood water.

“The fire service technical rescue team entered the water using an inflatable sled to effect rescue of two persons.”

A crew from Melton fire station and a water rescue team from Newark responded to the emergency at Coston, on Sproxton Road, after it was reported at 4.37pm on Saturday.

The fire service spokesperson said: “We got a call from a passer-by about a car in flood water with a person inside.

“Upon arrival, the incident was confirmed as a car stuck in a ford in three foot deep water with one person inside the vehicle.

“The fire service from Newark water rescue team entered the water using an inflatable sled to effect rescue from the vehicle.”
