Fire rips through row of cottages in Stapleford

This morning (Tuesday) fire crews from Melton and Loughborough were damping down at the scene of the devastating blaze at Bede Houses on Stapleford Road, checking for hot spots and salvaging what personal possessions they could from the cottages.

The cause of the blaze was unknown at the tie of going to press, with an investigation under way.

Firefighters were alerted to a chinmey fire at one of the cottages just after 9pm, with three crews initially sent to the scene.

Other crews and resources, including a command support vehicle from Shepshed, also arrived to assist through the night.

The fire in the roof of the first cottage had spread to the adjoining homes.

A Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said no people were reported to be inside the cottages at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

Speaking at the scene this morning watch manager Matt Hammond said: “We’ve salvaged what we can from the properties, where they are tiled, but until we can make them safe we can’t salvage any further belongings.”

None of the owners of the cottages were available for comment at the time of going to press.
