Melton’s Christmas lights switch-on saw the sky dazzle as a fireworks spectacular signalled the start of the festive season on Friday.
The streets around the town were awash with a host of colourful characters from Santa himself to street entertainers and a visit by novelty fire engine Trumpton.
Festivities leading up to the Market Place switch-on included a Christmas Tree Festival in St Mary’s Church, a host of Christmas games and activities and school children singing carols on stage.
Shops also opened their doors offering some late-night cheer. There was also entertainment from dancers and local bands.
The lights themselves were switched on by the Mayor of Melton Jeanne Douglas and by some of the stars of this year’s Peter Pan panto at Melton Theatre, including Britain’s Got Talent finalist Stephen Hall and Nicola McAllister.
Mayor of Melton Jeanne Douglas said: “The Christmas lights switch-on was very well attended and it was wonderful to see so many Meltonians out enjoying themselves.
“The fireworks gave a wonderful, finishing touch to a lively and entertaining countdown. Thanks to everyone who attended.”
