On what would have been the 22nd birthday of murdered Bottesford school girl Rosie May Storrie on Saturday, a dedicated team of runners are set to raise over £3,500 for a charity set up in her name.
The group of 35, of which 19 are from around the area, will run the Bupa London 10,000 in aid of the Rosie May Foundation.
The Rosie May Foundation was set up by her parents Graham and Mary Storrie to help orphans and abandoned girls in Sri Lanka. The charity runs the Rosie May Home, a unique family orientated orphanage in Sri Lanka, where sisters aged three to 18 years are reunited and cared for by live-in house parents.
Rosie May Foundation co-founder Mary Storrie said: “It’s always incredibly humbling to see people put so much of their time and energy into raising crucial funds for our cause.
“The charity’s aim is to support and empower girls in Sri Lanka; particularly through our children’s home – a unique project aiming to reunite girls with siblings and families, as well as give them the education to empower them to lift themselves out of poverty.”
One runner, Jane Lewis of Bingham, said: “I’m a trustee of the Rosie May Foundation and couldn’t think of a better fund-raising goal.
“We’ve all set ourselves a target of raising £100 to go towards the charity’s work in Sri Lanka, and are well on the way to achieving it.”
The fund-raising team will run the Bupa London 10,000 on May 25.
More than 40 special tea party events are also being held this month in Bottesford, around the UK and abroad to raise money for the charity.
The events are sponsored by Tatler’s Ceylon Tea, a Sri Lankan tea company with a plantation close to the Rosie May home, founded following the devastating tsunami in 2004.
Mrs Storrie said: “We started out aiming for 22 tea parties for what would’ve been Rosie May’s 22nd birthday on Saturday, and it just grew from there.
“It keeps Rosie May’s legacy alive – the girls at the Rosie May home in Sri Lanka are very excited about having their own tea party too.”
