A Melton park-goer has called for action to clean up the ‘disgusting’ state of the Priors Close pond and areas surrounding it.
The park-goer, who sent pictures to the Melton Times, told the newspaper: “I’ve often walked around the park with my three young children who love feeding the ducks. I was disgusted by the state of the areas surrounding the pond. It is overgrown, there’s duck poo all over the floor where children walk and vodka bottles and beer cans thrown into the pond. The algae is so thick and green the cans have stuck to the surface. It’s not a nice place to walk around, it’s just disgusting and filthy.”
The Melton Mowbray Town Estate looks after the town centre parks and the Priors Close pond.
Town Bailiff Andrew Cooper said barley bales had been put into the pond to treat the rising algae levels. He said: “It’s because we’ve had three weeks of dry and warm weather and the water has been so still, it’s ideal growing conditions for algae.
“We litter pick in the parks and around the pond area seven days a week. We routinely clear the pond of litter but we can’t do it everyday.”
