Melton borough students praised for excellent GCSE results

Headteachers in the Melton area have been praising students for their efforts after the annual release of GCSE results.

Teenagers went into school on Thursday to learn whether they achieved the necessary grades to move on to their chosen A-level subjects.

John Ferneley College and Long Field Academy did not publish pass rates but their heads were pleased with this year’s outcomes.

Principal of Long Field, Chris Haggett, said: “It was very challenging for our students this year with many taking a full complement of the new more difficult GCSES.

“The students however rose to the challenge and got some absolutely cracking results.

“You really do have to work hard to achieve the best grades with these new GCSEs and the students were rewarded for all of their hard work.”

Mr Haggett praised the work of teachers who he said ‘went out of their way to ensure every child in the school was supported in the lead up to and during the exams’.

One of the school’s outstanding students this year was Jack Sandilands, who also organised many of the school events over the past 12 months.

Mr Haggett said: “Jack has shown real entrepreneurial spirit throughout his time at the school and his A in business studies along with his other excellent grades leads him nicely to the next stage of his education.

“He is definitely going to be one to watch and also obtained an estimated progress score of two, meaning his results were two grades above where they expected to be.

“This led to a few tears on results day from Jack, his mum and his principal.”

Twins Lucy and Ella Thomas secured seven nine grades between them, with Ella pipping Lucy to the post with four nines over Lucy’s three nines.

Mr Haggett said: “The girls really understood the pressures of the new GCSEs and had worked so hard for the past five years at the school.

“They had both contributed so much to their time at the school and are great role models for our students in the school.

“Lucy had been an ambassador for the school for two years and had been involved in shaping the school into the fantastic place that it is today.”

“We look forward to seeing these students flourish in their future studies and careers.”

Her comments were echoed by Christine Stansfield, CEO of the Mowbray Education Trust, which manages eight local schools including Ferneley.

She said: “We have another great set of GCSE results and I’m so proud of our students and staff who have worked so hard to achieve this.”

Friends Amy Healey and Mia Forks congratulated each other on their grades - Amy got six nines and three eights and Mia seven nines an eight and an A*.

“I am so relieved,” commented Amy, while Mia said she felt ‘so overwhelmed’ with her achievements.

It was a great day, as well, for Harry Lee-Payton, who attained five nines, two eights and an A* and A.

He said: “I can’t believe it. I am so proud of myself.”

Adam Billson was also celebrating with his four nines, two eights, one seven and an A* and A.

GCSE students at the Priory Belvoir Academy, at Bottesford, had another excellent year with youngsters across the board making significant progress.

Individual successes included Jodie Hardcastle with four nines, three eights, two sevens and an A**, Keri Morgan-Smith with a nine, five eights, a seven, two sixes and an A* and Abigail Snow, who attained two nines, five eights and three sevens.

Ben Cullen achieved two nines, five eights, two sevens and an A**, Matty Cox got two nines, five eights, two sevens and an A* , and Harry Trenam attained two nines, three eights, four sevens and an A*.

Students with the A* and A** grades here all achieved them in further maths.

Headteacher Levon Newton said: “We are incredibly proud of these students as we know how much hard work has been done to achieve these excellent outcomes. “We are equally proud of the large number of students who have achieved or exceeded their targets.

“We thank them for being a fantastic year group and we wish them all continued success in their post-16 studies.”

Mr Newton said the excellent results couple with the the school’s recent ‘good’ Ofsted rating validated the good work teachers had been doing there.

Results achieved by students at Ratcliffe College were described as ‘excellent’ by headmaster Jonathan Reddin.

They placed the college in the top 10 per cent nationally in terms of the progress of students at this age group.

The overall pass rate with grades C/4 or above was 87 per cent, while 43 per cent of all grades were A* or A or seven, eight or nine on the new grading system.

The French, History and Latin departments all achieved a 100 per cent pass rate on the new system, while GCSEs in biology, chemistry, physics, Spanish and media also attained 100 per cent passess at C or above.

Results showed 96 per cent of biology grades were A* or A and over 50 per cent of all students achieved the top three grades of seven to nine, in mathematics and English literature.

Among the top performers were Eve Millward, who achieved seven grade nines, one grade seven and two A*s.

Ben Cook said he felt overawed with his results of 5A*s, one nine, two eights, one seven and two sixes.

Talented athlete, Mia Atkinson, who qualified for the England schools’ 1,500m event in July, attained three A*s, one nine, four eights, a seven and a six.
