The gesture will serve to start and finish a two-minute silence in tribute to those who have given their lives in armed conflicts.

The maroons will be fired by a member of the Army personnel from the Defence Animal Centre in the presence of the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Tejpal Bains.

The Mayor, Councillor David Wright, will attend a scheduled annual service outside the Royal British Legion headquarters in Thorpe End.

Councillor Wright said: “With the assistance of the RAVC Defence Animal Centre and co-operation from Melton Mowbray Town Estate, I have arranged for two maroons to be fired in the Play Close at 11am and 11.02am, respectively, to mark the beginning and end of the two-minute silence.

“The timing of the event will be taken from the clock at St Mary’s Church. On the first strike of 11am the first maroon will be fired and the second exactly two minutes later.”

The national president of the legion has again requested that the nation observes a two-minute silence at this time, which was the time hostilities officially ended in the First World War.
