Crowds filled Market Place and town centre thoroughfares throughout Friday in the build-up to the epic switching on of Melton’s Christmas lights.
And there was a huge audience when the festive illuminations were sparked into life by popular actress Lucinda Rhodes-Flaherty and Mayor of Melton John Wyatt, with raucous cheers filling the air as celebratory fireworks were set off.
Lucinda, star of CBBC show Cavegirl and the Dream Team series and who is due to appear as the Wicked Queen in this year’s Melton Theatre panto Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, chatted to people and posed for photographs with them.
Earlier in the day, 700 schoolchildren from 18 schools sang carols and Christmas songs on a stage over a period of five hours. Children were excited to see real reindeer in Market Place and they had the chance to visit Santa in his grotto after he paraded through the town with the Trumpton fire engine.
One of the other attractions was a snowglobe in which visitors were invited inside to have festive family photographs or pose with ice princesses from the upcoming Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs panto.
Town centre manager Lisa Brown said; “It was continuously busy in the town throughout the day which created such a great atmosphere.
“During the day we have never had such a big footfall as we got this year and all the traders I have spoken to said they did tremendously well.
“Lucinda was lovely and a real natural with people - she loves coming to Melton and is looking forward to being back here for the panto.”
The Mayor added: “Once again the Christmas festivities have been outstanding in Melton, starting with the switching on of the Christmas lights in the town on Friday, which was so well supported.”
