Raiders steal cash from Melton shop

Melton Bookshop was closed on Monday after burglars broke in over the weekend.

Petty cash and money donated in charity tins for Marie Curie, Macmillan Cancer Support and the Derbyshire Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance was taken in the raid.

Shop owner Catherine Baker said: “They got away with about £150 altogether.

“Fortunately, none of the books were taken though.”

The intruders were believed to have got into the Leicester Street property through a window at the rear which leads into the children’s books department.

The raid happened some time between 5pm on Saturday and 9.30am on Monday.

Catherine decided to close the shop on Monday so the police could investigate and for the minor damage to be cleaned up. Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Leicester Street area at the time of the incident, is asked to contact Leicestershire Police on 101.
