Melton residents are being urged to keep their homes secure, leave a light on when they go out and report suspicious activity to police as soon as possible, with Christmas approaching, despite Leicestershire Police seeing a significant drop in burglaries during October and November.

Burglaries during October and November this year were at their lowest level for 10 years during the force’s ‘Light Up! Lock Up!’ winter burglary prevention campaign which has also led to 85 arrests.

The campaign was launched in response to crime pattern analysis which shows that burglaries increase during October, November and December - during the darker winter months. To stop this seasonal peak teams of officers, who work on a late or night shift, have been patrolling burglary ‘hot spots’. Acting on intelligence they’ve also been carrying out warrants and visiting known offenders. A separate specialist burglary team has also been created, with dedicated neighbourhood officers from local police teams working alongside them.
