The operation will take place between this coming Saturday and Sunday, January 31, in Windsor Street and various locations around the town centre.

Pc Thomas Hamilton-Rutter, the officer running the operation, said: “The town centre is protected by a pedestrian zone which enables pedestrians to walk safely between shops. The only exception to this is if you are loading where you are allowed to enter the zone between the hours of 4pm and 10am.

“Windsor Street, on occasions, is used as a short cut, however this road is clearly signposted with traffic signs advising that no access is permitted to motor vehicles, except buses and for access. The access relates to the shops and residential properties situated on the street.

“I would ask that the few motorists that choose to ignore the Highway Code and traffic signs ensure they comply with them to avoid being reported for consideration of prosecution.”

Officers will be overtly monitoring within the town centre with letters of advice being issued to first time offenders. Anyone caught ignoring the signs after being given an initial warning will be dealt with by means of a traffic offence report.
