Police are scaling back searches for missing Durham University student Euan Coulthard, who comes from Bottesford, but officers conducting the investigation are still hopeful of finding him alive.
Euan (19), who is studying law at St Mary’s College, disappeared late last Wednesday (January 14) after a night out in the city.
Police have been conducting searches in the city and the River Wear after he was last seen on CCTV crossing the pedestrian Framwellgate Bridge alone. Police have established that his mobile phone powered down several minutes later.
Superintendent Colin Williamson, who is leading the investigation, said: “As it currently stands, we have scaled back searches of the river and the river bank, however, we will continue with periodic searches this week as the river ebbs and flows.
“With help from our fire and mountain rescue and fell rescue colleagues, the river has been searched from 300 metres beyond Prebends Bridge back down to Finchale Abbey.
“Certain parts of the river at Chester-le-Street and Washington have also been searched.
“Despite this, there has been no change in terms of new information coming to light. However, we are still hopeful of finding Euan alive and we are still appealing for information, no matter how small it may seem.
“Any information that comes to us will be investigated immediately.”
Anyone with information is urged to call police on 101.
